I Visited China in 2025 - Here is What Surprised Me
I visited China in 2025, and here's what surprised me the most. Coming from Western media narratives, I expected something completely different from what I actually experienced.
Transit Without Visa (TWOV)
One of the biggest surprises was how easy it now is to visit China. The visa-free transit system made my trip incredibly accessible. No complicated applications, no waiting weeks for approval - just book a flight and go.
First Impressions
Stepping off the plane in Shanghai, I was immediately struck by how modern and clean everything was. The airport was world-class, the infrastructure was impressive, and the efficiency was unlike anything I'd seen before.
Surprises Along the Way
-
Safety - Walking alone at night in Shanghai felt completely safe. The presence of security made me feel protected, not surveilled.
-
People - Every person I asked for help went out of their way to assist me. From ordering food to navigating the metro, strangers became helpers.
-
Technology - The cashless society is real and works flawlessly. Once you set up Alipay or WeChat Pay, you can pay for everything with your phone.
-
Food - The culinary diversity was overwhelming. From street food to high-end restaurants, every meal was an adventure.
Cultural Standouts
The contrast between ancient traditions and cutting-edge modernity is something you have to experience to believe. Standing in front of the Terracotta Warriors in Xi'an while thinking about the futuristic skyline of Shanghai created a unique perspective on this incredible country.
Would I Go Back?
In a heartbeat. China has completely changed my perception, and I can't wait to explore more of what this amazing country has to offer.
